Best TV Design Shows are from Canada

As a decorator, I subscribe to virtually every home publication, from Interior Design to Architectural Digest to This Old House. And I have my favorite TV designers as well, my gurus.  I watch their shows religiously and critique their work. Candice Olson is one of my favorites (Divine Design) for her creative use of color and fabric (although not everybody can afford silk drapes throughout). Candice is from Canada. Sarah Richardson (Design Inc.) is another favorite for her exquisite taste and simplicity and her subtle use of color. She’s out of Canada too. Then there’s Jane Lockhart (Get Color) who shows us a fun way to find color inspiration in things we love. Of course, she actually chooses the colors for the room, but the homeowners feel like they did and everybody’s happy. Jane does a nice job accessorizing and pulling rooms together with sometimes rather unique color palettes. I think Jane’s in Canada too.

These are my favorites out of all the decorating shows on HGTV. I don’t watch the ones on other networks where neighbors decorate your house. Those shows give me nightmares.

Is it just a coincidence that these tasteful designers are all from Canada? Or maybe it’s just my taste that seems to mesh with theirs.
